Tate Britain’s Hepworth Garden
The problem with having an exhibition throughout the height of summer is that nobody wants to go inside to see it.
Inspired by this challenge, I independently commissioned the first ever public art installation outdoors at Tate Britain: a garden that mirrored the shapes and colours of Barbara Hepworth’s textile designs (that were on display inside).
The interactive garden was a hit and planted a seed (!) for thinking about the gallery in new ways; as a public space that could be visited, ‘grammed and shared. It also went on to be displayed at the Chelsea flower show.
Following the success of the garden, Tate Britain now commissions an annual outdoor art installation that takes over the building and attracts thousands of new visitors each year. The installation reveal has become something of the ‘John Lewis Xmas advert’ in the cultural calendar, garnering widespread coverage and becoming a ‘must see’ for festive Londoners and beyond.
